Course Description

You have completed your book and are either self-publishing it or have found a publisher for it. You may think it is now time to take a well-deserved rest, after the rigors of crafting that perfect manuscript — but think again!

Writing your book is only the first step. You have used all the creativity and craft in your powers to accomplish this. Now you will have to take off your creative hat and put on your salesmanship cap, because even the best book won't sell unless people know it's available.

If you have a publisher, you may think promotion of your book will be done by him/her. Only partly. Even best-selling authors must make themselves available for book tours, book signings and events, and radio and TV appearances and interviews.

For first-time authors, publishers rarely invest a lot of money on promotion. Your book is an unknown quantity, a gamble, and publishers expect to make profits on only 3 out of 10 books they publish.

If you want your book to succeed in the marketplace, you'll have to be willing to do a large part of the promoting of it. Work with your publisher's publicity department and devise a cooperative program. Find out exactly what the publisher will do, then be prepared to pick up where the publishing company leaves off. If you are self-publishing, of course, you already know that all promotion and marketing will be up to you.

This seminar will explain how to arrange and handle book signings; how to get on radio and TV shows; how to get your book listed with the major distributors and on amazon.com; how to get your appearances posted on the internet; what should be included in your press kit; how to sell your book to libraries and special markets; how to prepare Sell Sheets, and much more.

Week 2. Sell Sheets, Bookmarks and Postcards - additional tools for successful sales. How to create them and use them.

Week 6. Selling to Libraries & Special Markets - With over 15,000 public libraries,73,000 school libraries, 15,000 special libraries and 2,300 federal libraries in the U.S., selling to libraries is a worthwhile effort. Learn how to reach them and how to identify and reach special markets.
