Course Description

Elements of Promotional Writing will cover the basics of writing promotional materials for businesses and professionals including press releases, flyers, slogans/mottos, sales letters, brochures, three piece mailer, layout/graphics, marketing, and pricing.

 
Course Outline

Week 1: Introduction: What are the markets? Pricing
HOMEWORK: Explore the pricing/market possibilities in your area. Report on your findings.

Week 2: Press release basics. Flyers, Slogans/Mottos.
HOMEWORK: Write a press release, fact or fiction, keeping in mind the basic elements and inverted pyramid structure. Write a slogan/motto to be featured in a flyer (real or imagined).

Week 3: Sales letters, Motivations -- Why read on?
HOMEWORK: Write a sales letter using the facts, figures, and statistics given, or create your own. Specify your target audience.

Week 4: Brochures
HOMEWORK: Write and design a brochure for a real or imagined business. Submit cover copy.

Week 5: Brochures, Three-piece mailers
HOMEWORK: Write a return response card for your brochure/sales letter. Submit final brochure copy.

Week 6: Layout, Graphics, Marketing
HOMEWORK: Contact three graphics shops/individuals you could use to create the artwork for your writing. Report on your findings.
HOMEWORK may be changed to suit the class needs.

About Your Teacher

The Write Image provides quality writing services to business owners, professionals, and individuals. Michael and Jennifer Dearmin specialize in all areas of non-fiction writing including promotional writing and magazine article writing.

Jennifer Dearmin holds a master's degree in English with an emphasis on writing, and has years of writing experience to her credit, as well as years of pre- press experience. She has also taught writing at the university level.

Michael Dearmin holds a Ph.D. in English, also has years of writing experience, years of theatrical experience, and is the company's photographer. Furthermore, he has spent the better part of his life teaching both writing and literature at colleges and universities.
