COURSE DESCRIPTION:

By the conclusion of this course you will have created a blueprint for getting your book into production and for marketing it. It is not expected (far from it!!) that you actually publish before completing the course, but you will have a clear idea of the aspects of marketing, promotion, production and setting up a publishing business. While there is no guarantee that your book will succeed beyond your wildest dreams, you will, on completion of this course, have greatly enhanced its chances for success.

 
OUTLINE:

Week 1: MARKETING
Background of the Publishing Industry/Small Press segment. Product work. Marketing Channels.

Week 2: PROMOTION
Looking at promotional programs for the marketing channels discussed in the previous session. Developing sales and marketing materials. Using the Media for book promotion

Week 3: PREPARING CONTENT FOR PUBLICATION
The technicalities of final manuscript preparation. The book itself. Pre-production issues

Week 4: PRODUCTION
Costs in publishing. Printing decisions. Print production. Production issues
Non-print book options:
- Audio tapes
- CD-ROM
- Electronic books (on-line)

Week 5: THE BUSINESS SIDE
Business management. Financing. Equipping for business (the paper side). Set up bookkeeping system

Week 6: THE BUSINESS SIDE
Business Channels. Pricing strategies, policies. Where can I turn? Resources for advice.

ABOUT YOUR TEACHER:

Pat Bell is a native of Oklahoma but her home has long been in Minnesota. She earned a bachelor's degree and a Master's degree from the University of Oklahoma. Language has been a core interest for her, and her professional activities, varied as they are, have centered on that core.

She taught high school Latin, various high school English department courses, a brief round of teaching English composition in a community college. She wrote and produced newsletters for a renewable energy association and for a publishers organization. She established her own publishing company in 1986 and has since published four titles. Two other titles were published in another publishing collaboration.

Based on her experiences and continuing study, she provides consulting services for neophyte publishers.
