about

Welcome to our STUDENT HANDBOOK page.

This used to be a much longer web page. When we started, just getting people onto the Web was a Herculean task and it was not uncommon for a student to simply be unable to deal with the technical requirements to take a course. Today, it's simple, but we keep this page around for old time's sake. Most of this is covered elsewhere too.

Thanks for being a part of our school. If you have ANY questions about the school in general, write to the Director. That e-mail link is at the top left of every web page.

If you have specific questions about your course, write to me or to the teacher as seems appropriate. I have made up a "how-to" manual based upon our previous experience. Please do take a moment to read it, as the information is very important. And I would appreciate any feedback you could give to me.

Our complaint department is always on call.

WHO'S WHO AND WHAT'S WHAT: WritersCollege.com is an online correspondence school. Our courses are designed for personal and/or professional growth, but do not earn you any credit with any degree-granting institution. Nor do we offer CEUs (Continuing Education Units). If you complete your course work and satisfy your teacher, we will send you a Certificate of Completion.

Most of our teachers live in the United States, but some live in other countries. The same goes for your fellow students. We are a global community with some things in common:

Teachers usually earn all or part of their living doing the thing they teach. We select teachers with "hands-on" experience. Students are adults with busy lives. We work together in a flexible manner to accommodate everyone as best we can; this is one of the hallmarks of WritersCollege.com We are a global community with a common love of writing and a desire to better our skills.

HOW THE SCHOOL WORKS: WritersCollege.com has about sixty courses. Your course starts the Monday after you register. Check the Catalog for course lengths and prices. Some courses are also offered as 'Extended' courses, which last twice as long. Extended courses contain no additional material; they just give you two weeks to do each assignment. Extended courses cost slightly more.

We have very fast turnaround on mail (since our mail is electronic).

For a variety of reasons, we do not offer live chats. If you need to know why not, visit our FAQs page where this is discussed in detail.

Students often ask us what time a course starts. Or they write to us on the day that a course starts to say they have not yet heard from their teacher, and is anything wrong. Relax. Nothing in the course has that precise a schedule. You may have weekly deadlines for homework or reading. There is a set ending date for the course. But except for those few rules, you have the freedom to work at times convenient to you. That flexibility is the whole point of an online correspondence school.

And your teacher WILL be in touch early in the first week of the course, if not on the first day. I'll explain this in more detail in (d) Registering, Getting Started, Dropping Out, Finishing Up, below

PROBLEMS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND WHO TO CONTACT: In general, if you have a problem with your course material, ask the teacher. If you have problems with some aspect of the school, write to the Director. There are links to both at your course Catalog page.

We're very serious about the school. If you registered for a course we will do our very best to get you the instruction for which you paid. If, for some unforeseen reason, we cannot, you get your money back. Conversely, when you registered you took one of a limited number of slots in one of our courses. If the course turns out to be something radically different from what you expected when you paid your money, you may have a refund (see below for details). Otherwise, we expect you to stick with it, not drop out for trivial reasons, and work hard to get the most you can from the course. We want you to get your money's worth and we know, too, that students who work hard are likely to come back and take another course from us.

REGISTERING, GETTING STARTED, DROPPING OUT, FINISHING UP: Most of you registered by credit/debit card, using our secure registration program. Some of you mailed in checks or money orders. ALL registrations, including checks or money orders, must be in our hands before we set the start date for the course.

Your course will "start" on the next Monday after we receive your registration unless you make other arrangements with us. But we are flexible and there are several things to know:

If you registered at the last minute we may not know about it for a day or three. Don't worry about this. We will be in touch as soon as possible and we have plenty of flexibility. If you receive no welcome by Wednesday of the first week, let me know. A few teachers use slightly different schedules. If this is the case, they will tell you.

Dropping out: You have ten days from your start date to check out the course and decide if it is for you. We refund money, no questions asked, up to the tenth day. After that, we have to pay the teacher anyway, so we do not offer refunds after the tenth day.

Finishing up: You will receive a course evaluation form at the end of the course. We appreciate any comments, praise, suggestions, tips, you can give us. If you did your homework and otherwise satisfied the teacher, we will issue a Certificate of Completion. WritersCollege.com is not certified to issue college credits.

These are handled separately.
